Docents are trained volunteers who guide visitors through museum exhibitions to facilitate greater understanding and enjoyment of the art. Docents can be the momentum and the backbone behind innovative programming that would not be possible without their willingness to dedicate precious time and energy.
And this is an exciting time to be an LSU Museum of Art Docent! With upcoming exhibitions like Living Color: the Photographs of Judy Cooper, Gabriel Laderman: Unconventional Realist, Of People and Places: Contemporary Art from the JPMorgan Chase Art Collection, George Ohr Rising: the Emergence of an American Master, Painting with Jazz: Eugene Martin, John T. Scott, and Frank Hayden, Caroline Durieux: A Radioactive Wit, Tearing Granite: The Sculpture of Jesus Moroles, and Innovations in Contemporary Louisiana Glass which promise to be popular, fun, engaging, and put the LSU Museum of Art on Baton Rouge’s cultural “to do” list.
Also, changes in what people expect from a museum visit are encouraging us to provide more conversational or discussion based tours. This means less memorization and more interaction between the docent and their groups.
No previous art experience is necessary, but an interest in it certainly does help. It is also important that you be comfortable speaking to groups of people. All the other “tools” you need will be provided during regular meetings of the Docent Team.
